Kubernetes Glossary
Hey there,
I read many articles online on Kubernetes and realized the need to have a comprehensive glossary of terms related to Kubernetes. So, I have compiled a short Kubernetes glossary that covers most of the key terms used in Kubernetes.

Here, I am mentioning the key glossary terms related to Kubernetes. This glossary can be used as a quick reference or cheatsheet.
1. DevOps Terms:
- DevOps: A methodology combining development and operations to improve efficiency and reduce time to market.
- Continuous Integration (CI): Practice of continuously merging, testing, and building code changes to detect issues early.
- Continuous Delivery (CD): Practice of continuously deploying code changes to a staging or production environment.
2. Kubernetes Concepts:
- Kubernetes: An open-source platform that can automate deployment, scaling, and management of containerized applications.
- Containerization: Packaging applications and dependencies into containers.
- Microservices: Structuring an application as a collection of loosely coupled, independently deployable services.
- YAML: Data serialization format used for configuration files in Kubernetes.
- API: Set of protocols and standards for building and accessing software applications.
3. Key Kubernetes Resources:
- Node: A physical or virtual machine running containers in a Kubernetes cluster.
- Pod: It is the smallest deployable unit in Kubernetes, consisting of one or more containers.
- Namespace: Virtual cluster within a Kubernetes cluster for resource partitioning.
- Replication Controller: Ensures a specified number of pod replicas are running.
- Service: Offers a stable IP address and DNS name for a cluster of pods.
- Deployment: Manages a set of pod replicas and supports rolling updates.
- StatefulSet: Manages stateful applications requiring stable hostnames and persistent storage.
- Ingress: Manages external access to various services in a cluster.
- Helm: A package manager for Kubernetes simplifying application management.
4. Advanced Kubernetes Features:
- DaemonSet: Ensures a specific pod runs on all nodes in a cluster.
- Operator: Extends Kubernetes API with custom resources and controllers.
- Rolling Update: Updates replicas one at a time to keep the application available.
- Canary Deployment: Gradually introduces new application versions to a subset of users.
- Horizontal Scaling: Automatically scales replicas based on CPU or memory usage.
- Service Mesh: Provides traffic management, load balancing, and service discovery.
- Persistent Volume: Provides durable storage for containers.
- Secret: Stores sensitive information like passwords or keys.
- ConfigMap: Stores configuration data as key-value pairs.
- Custom Resource Definition (CRD): Allows defining custom resources and controllers.
5. Deployment Strategies:
- Blue/Green Deployment: Switches traffic from one application version to another.
- Rolling Update: Updates pods in a rolling fashion to minimize downtime.
6. Scaling and Management:
- Autoscaling: Automatically scales the number of pods based on resource usage.
- Resource Quota: Limits the amount of CPU, memory, and storage a pod can consume.
- Horizontal Pod Autoscaler: Adjusts the number of pod replicas based on CPU usage.
This glossary provides a comprehensive reference for understanding key terms and concepts related to Kubernetes and DevOps. Hope it will be helpful for professionals and students alike who are passionately using or learning Kubernetes and DevOps.
