An Awkward Blessing
A rude gesture I will never forget
It took me a few years of travelling to accept the cultural value of different traditions. By participating in rituals foreign to my own beliefs, I began to understand the importance of diversity.
I often take my worldly experience for granted and I’m shocked sometimes by the inability of some to cohabitate with others. The last place I expected to see this social awkwardness was in my workplace.
I work in an industry where most of the workers are migrants. At work, there are Hindus, Christians, Catholics, Buddhists, and many more religions that are worshipped by the employees.
The Meeting
Today there was a thank you meeting where my colleagues and I gathered for a congratulations-type ceremony. A few jokes were made and many of us were laughing and in good spirits.
After the pats on the back were done, we were given goodies bags and awards, before we settled down to pizza and a few soft drinks.
Before we could start eating. A short prayer was initiated by my supervisor’s boss. There were a few white managers there who were agnostic. The prayer was done in Christian style where Jesus Christ was thanked for providing the blessing of life and for the food we would eat.
