About A Time When I Was Afraid Of Thunderstorms
And now I’m charmed by them
I sat on my balcony. It became very windy out of nowhere. Some time ago, it was brightly sunny. But now, it became darker.
I can smell the rain approaching. The day has become dark. It’s 8 p.m., but it’s still not the time for the sun to set.
I can hear some lightning bolts, but they are still far away. So is the rain.
But I am happy because I have some weird fondness for this weather.
It is weird because, as a kid, I had a phobia like no other.
The moment I would see a darker cloud in the sky, I would hide in my house, having my grandmother keep my eyes and ears closed.
During the thunderstorms, I felt like I could stop breathing.
I felt the fear of death. What if this lightning would strike outside my house or even on me?
I can’t remember exactly what I was afraid that would happen.
But I was afraid—no, absolutely terrified—of the shapes that a lightning bolt would take and the sound that it would make.
We live in an area next to the sea, so the lightning bolts would strike the water close to us, causing our…
